IELTS Listening: Avoid These Spelling, Word Limit and Gap-Filling Mistakes

Sometimes you hear the right information but still lose the mark. The problem is what you write in the gap. You might misspell a word, exceed the word limit, or repeat a word the question already provides. Even a missing -s can turn a correct answer into an incorrect one.
Here are four mistakes to watch for, with examples and a short practice activity.
1. Spelling the correct word incorrectly
In IELTS Listening, a misspelled answer is marked wrong—even if you understood the recording.
Question: The college can help students find ________.
You hear: “We can help you find accommodation near the campus.”
❌ accomodation
✅ accommodation
Other common spelling mistakes include:

After each practice test, collect the words you misspelled. Learn them in phrases such as “book accommodation” and “protect the environment”, then cover them and write them from memory.
2. Exceeding the word limit
Check the instructions before you listen. If you write more words than allowed, your answer is marked wrong.
Instruction: Write ONE WORD ONLY.
Question: Visitors should bring a ________.
You hear: “Remember to bring a towel.”
❌ a towel — two words
✅ towel — one word
The question already includes a, so you only need the noun.
Different instructions allow different answers:

For example, under “NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS”, both “library” and “main library” fit the limit. “The main library” does not.
You don’t need to use the maximum number of words. Write only what correctly completes the answer.
3. Repeating words already provided around the gap
The phrase you hear may not be the exact phrase you need to write. Read the completed sentence to check.
Question: The deposit is one ________ of the total cost.
You hear: “You’ll need to pay a third of the total cost.”
❌ a third
✅ third
Compare:
❌ The deposit is one a third of the total cost.
✅ The deposit is one third of the total cost.
Here is another example:
Question: The hotel is next to the ________.
You hear: “It’s next to the railway station.”
❌ the railway station
✅ railway station
Writing “the railway station” would produce “next to the the railway station.” Even if your answer fits the word limit, it must also fit the gap.
4. Missing singular or plural endings
A small ending can change whether your answer is correct.
Question: The price includes two ________.
You hear: “You’ll receive two tickets for the evening performance.”
❌ ticket
✅ tickets
Before listening, look for clues around the gap:
a / an usually signals a singular countable noun: a ticket, an umbrella.
two / several / many signals a plural noun: two tickets, several museums.
Use these clues to predict the form, then listen carefully to confirm the answer.
Practise: Can you complete the gaps correctly?
Write ONE WORD ONLY for each answer. Use the recording extracts below to practise choosing exactly what belongs in each gap.
Question 1
The first lesson is on ________.
Recording: “Your first lesson will be on Wednesday morning.”
Question 2
Students must bring their own ________.
Recording: “We provide the computers, but you’ll need to bring your own headphones.”
Question 3
The journey takes half an ________.
Recording: “It takes about thirty minutes to get there—half an hour.”
Question 4
The fee includes three ________.
Recording: “You’ll receive three textbooks. They’re included in the course fee.”
Question 5
The nearest ________ is opposite the hotel.
Recording: “There’s a restaurant directly opposite your hotel.”
Answers and explanations
1. Wednesday
Write only the day. “Wednesday morning” exceeds the one-word limit.
2. headphones
Keep the plural form. You don’t need “own” because it is already in the question.
3. hour
The question already provides “half an.” Writing the whole phrase would repeat those words.
4. textbooks
The answer needs the plural ending because the fee includes three books.
5. restaurant
Check the spelling: restaurant, not resturant.
What to check in your next practice test
For each wrong answer, ask: Did I miss the information, or did I write it incorrectly?
If you heard it correctly, check these four things:
Did I spell the answer correctly?
Did I stay within the word limit?
Did I repeat anything already provided?
Did I use the correct singular or plural form?
This tells you what to practise next. If spelling caused three mistakes, use those three words for a short spelling exercise before taking another test.
